The United States only recycles about 1/3 of its total waste generated every year. Some waste products, like paper and paperboard, are recycled at close to a 70 percent rate, while plastics are only at a dismal 9 percent globally.

The biggest problem with plastic recycling is plastics. There a dozens of plastic types used in consumer goods but not all of them are easily recycled.

In addition, the sheer volume of plastic waste threatens to overwhelm our existing capacity for processing and recycling it all. Which means much of it is exported elsewhere or ends up in our landfills.

The downside is that so much of these materials never make it to recycling facilities and end up in our landfills instead. And that's a losing proposition.
