The Challenge Of Green Junk Disposal

Junk removal and disposal is not only a major industry in the US, but it is a function across the globe. And pressing challenge is for sustainable and recyclable waste.

The United States only recycles about 1/3 of its total waste generated every year. Some waste products, like paper and paperboard, are recycled at close to a 70 percent rate, while plastics are only at a dismal 9 percent globally.

Striving for Zero Waste

It would be an exaggeration to say that the world is inundated with trash. However, many parts of the planet are close to that. One of the most challenging goals of many nations, states, and cities is to achieve "Zero Waste" status.

According to the Zero Waste International Alliance (ZWIA),

“Zero Waste: The conservation of all resources by means of responsible production, consumption, reuse, and recovery of products, packaging, and materials without burning and with no discharges to land, water, or air that threaten the environment or human health.”

So, the goal isn't so much to eliminate all trash, waste, and junk as it is to eliminate waste that is harmful to the planet.

The ZIWA goes on to state the following,

“Zero Waste means designing and managing products and processes to systematically avoid and eliminate the volume and toxicity of waste and materials, conserve and recover all resources, and not burn or bury them. Implementing Zero Waste will eliminate all discharges to land, water or air that are a threat to planetary, human, animal or plant health.”

"Recover all resources" is where recycling comes in and is at the heart of how we operate our junk removal and disposal business.

But it is a huge initiative and all the Junk King franchise locations combined cannot hope to put significant dent in the problem of green junk disposal without everyone's help.

Considering the Challenge of Green Junk Disposal

We've put together an infographic to illustrate some of the key aspects of green junk and waste disposal, and the challenges facing an eventual "zero waste" state of things.

For most of us, achieving zero waste starts at home. However, as a nation, we're not doing so good at it.

According to State of Curbside Recycling 2020, out of the average 37.4 million tons of household waste that is recyclable, over 20 million tons are thrown in the trash due to lack of access and participation in recycling programs.

Unfortunately, too many of us simply toss things out. But adding to the municipal waste stream  (MWS) and your local landfill isn't the best option. In fact, much of what we consider simply junk or trash can, in fact, be re-utilized or sent to a recycling center.

Most of us are familiar with the common materials that get recycled from homes: paper, plastic, aluminum cans, and glass. But there are several other household items and materials that can be recycled either into raw material, reused, or repurposed.

New call-to-action

Junk King - A Green Warrior Since Day One

We founded Junk King in 2005 as the first recycling-based junk removal operation and we strive to recycle up to 60 percent of every load we bring in. This is good for your community, your town, your neighborhood, and the planet.

Junk King is proud to be North America’s greenest residential junk removal service. We sort each and every job for metals, e-waste, paper, household goods, textiles, furniture and appliances, in our recycling warehouses.

And “being green” also means we donate, repurpose, and reuse everything from clothing, toys, baby cribs and strollers, to office furniture and supplies.

At Junk King, we also realize that not all junk removal and hauling companies will properly dispose of waste, which is why we believe you should only hire a company that will recycle as much material as possible, and one that is committed to a clean environment and zero waste practices.

So, thank you for your support!
