Recycling Scrap Metal Can Benefit Everyone

Posted by Junk King on Sep 13, 2018 11:22:00 AM

Many homeowners tend to take their old equipment and used appliances to the dump. If they are even aware that many of their items can be recycled as scrap metal they’re often unsure how to go about it. But scrap metal recycling should be their first choice.

Many homeowners and even business owners find that getting rid of metal items can be difficult. This is especially true if those items are too large to throw into your curbside trash bin. If the material is simply scrap metal, or a hopelessly broken appliance, selling it is not an option.

Some people do consider recycling these things, but this, too, can be a challenge if you don't know how to go about it or where to take them. The truth is, that recycling scrap metal is often a much more difficult and even a bit more dangerous task than recycling your common household trash removal chores.

Yes, Metal Items Can Be Recycled

Everyone is used to recycling aluminum cans, but many people don't realize they can recycle all those junk metal items they need to get rid of. Unfortunately, most municipal disposal services are not often much help in educating customers about metal recycling, although this is changing.

In fact, unlike the familiar items for recycling such as paper, glass and aluminum cans, information explaining and promoting the recycling of scrap metal is not easy to come by.

And statistics back up this contention. In a survey by the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI), it was determined that more than 100 million American adults do not really know what can and cannot be recycled, nor even where to get information about recycling. For context, keep in mind that this represents almost 50 percent of the entire adult population in America.

But the fact is that a vast of junk that doesn't seem to be reusable actually is. This is especially true when it comes to your scrap metal items, which is why recycling is often the best disposal solution for them.

The Sustainable Option: Scrap Metal Recycling

The Construction Equipment Guide had an article which noted that scrap metal prices began to increase beginning in November 2016 for the first time in roughly five years. This upward movement marked a positive development for the scrap recycling industry.

In fact, after more than half a decade of dropping metal prices, many scrap metal companies either closed down or managed to sell their businesses.

This downturn in prices had a noticeable impact on the recycling industry as a whole, and on the scrap metal field in particular. Unfortunately, it also had a detrimental impact on the environment and economy of the United States.

One of the main reasons for the price drop was that there a surplus of scrap metal materials which could be recycled for meeting the production needs of most manufacturers. This drove down demand, which in turn, drove down prices.

Fortunately, coinciding with the recent presidential election, these factors began to reverse.

The United States is typically able to recycle enough steel to make cars, enough aluminum to make soda cans, and other metals for various building construction materials. But this can only be accomplished with enough people contribute to the recycling stream.

When that does not occur regularly and consistently, then much of this potential recycled material is lost to a landfill. This unfortunate since scrap metal is such a great candidate for recycling. Part of the problem is a lack of awareness on the part of the public, and a need for more education on the part of the scrap metal industry.

Here's a graphic snapshot of the state of scrap metal recycling in the United States:
