As a business owner you want to run your business cost-effectively and with the bottom line in mind. And that should include trash removal service.

Every business owner understands the value of well-made purchasing decisions. This includes services as well as goods, whether that's equipment, raw materials or inventory.

However, some of these decisions are not always made with the best ROI in mind. And one of these is the decision to use outsource large trash removal.

Trash Removal: In-House or Outsource?

Yet, if this is a recurring need, then hiring (or not hiring) a trash removal company should be treated as a strategic business decision.  If it proves to be more cost-effective to outsource this service - and we believe it is - then it's never just a matter of finding the first company in the phone book (does anyone even use a phone book anymore?) or on a Google search.

Undoubtedly, there are companies out there whose pricing structures are not favorable for this kind of service, but are more than willing to take your money along with your trash.  But that doesn't mean you couldn't have done it cheaper yourself.

The goal is to find a company that you can rely on, that is both quick and efficient, and gets the job done in a comprehensive and reliably professional manner. Along with these requirements, the price should be such that you know it would cost you more in gas, fees, and lost productivity to do the job yourself.

Not to mention security.

Think about it: when you hire a trash hauling service to remove your large trash, you are also inviting strangers to come onto your facility, allowing them into your workplace and giving them broad and often unaccompanied access.

This requires a great degree of trust and confidence that the firm you hired is both trustworthy and reputable.

And there is the aspect of safety, as well. Liability issues can become problematic when vendors are on site, performing services, and you don't want anyone there that might get hurt, hurt your employees, or damage your property.

It's a risky move, but you might get away with a local guy with a truck for a one-off trash hauling job. And you might end up getting the job done cheaper than having to do it yourself.

Or not.

Non-bonded, uninsured individuals who hire themselves and their old trucks out to haul trash or other junk removal tasks represent a whole other category of liability risks. Not to mention lack of professionalism and quality work.

Ultimately, outsourcing to a professional trash removal company is going to be your best bet for ongoing trash removal or even those "once in a while" big trash generating events like remodel projects or spring cleaning your workplace.

But how do you decide who to call?

Wanted: A Good Trash Removal Company

Trash removal companies - AKA professional junk hauling firms – are not all created equal.

And, while it is simple enough to call the first one you think of, or the first one that comes up in a web search, it pays to be discriminating when making this kind of vendor choice. Remember that this is a business decision, not just a task on your executive "to-do" list.

Having said that, there are a few factors to consider when looking for and selecting a highly professional and reliable trash removal company:

1. Do they provide accurate and free estimates and fair pricing?

Your trash removal company should give you an upfront estimate on what a job will cost you. They should also charge you only for the amount of junk that they actually haul. Make sure there aren’t any hidden fees and that you only pay for what you get.

2. Do they present a clean and professional image?

Although image can be deceiving, it is still a good indicator of the overall quality of a business, particularly with a junk disposal business. Look at things such as uniforms, website and branding, toll-free phone numbers and a physical location.

It’s easy for an unlicensed contractor to buy a used pickup truck, put a sign on it, and start working. Yet, these are the type of operators that could easily damage your facility, or create a costly problem with the improper transportation or disposal of your trash.

3. Does the company have a robust recycling policy?

A responsible, current and professional Junk Removal company will have a recycling policy in place. Whereas some unlicensed junk haulers may pick up your trash and dispose of it illegally, many items can and should be recycled. Make sure to ask your prospective junk removal vendor the details of their recycling policy. Environmentally responsible companies will keep the majority of your junk out of landfills.

4. How are their testimonials and online reviews?

It’s always good to check Google reviews and online review sites like Yelp! to ascertain other customer’s experiences with a particular trash removal company. Although these can sometimes contain fake reviews and a few disgruntled customer’s misplaced rants, they are still a good place to find some relevant information about the company you are about to work with. Learn how to pick out the useful reviews and get an overall sense of a company’s performance.

Business Owner: Trash Removal is Not Your Job

With new laws governing the disposal and destruction of trash and mechanical waste being passed all the time, disposal firms that can fully comply with those laws provide a valuable service for businesses owners and the community.

One of the advantages of working with a professional junk removal company that they will have regular contracts with recycling facilities, landfills, and transfer stations. This means that you will pay less by hiring them than by working with a municipal waste management company or agency. That's because the professional firms who look to recycle typically get better rates, which means they can pass those savings on to you.

Another trash removal issue is e-waste, or electronic waste, which is everywhere in our offices and workplaces. At the rate that consumers and businesses replace and upgrade electronics, millions of old devices and other electronic equipment end up dust in some storage closet or vacant office.

Because it is typically illegal to simply throw these items into the waste stream, the problem with e-waste is proper disposal.

There are a number of other issues to consider with e-waste disposal, too.

Because of the numerous e-waste laws and regulations, especially in states such as California, many items such as monitors, TVs, and even cell phones cannot be simply tossed in the trash legally. And, when you do go to properly dispose of a computer monitor, for example, the process can take time, effort and money.

This is especially true for old CRT monitors and televisions that are still around and still need to be disposed of.

A real benefit of having a professional firm remove your e-waste along with other trash is that you don’t have to have unsightly junk and debris taking up space at your business. Typically, you can have it taken away that day or the next day, and even from inside your place of business so you don’t have to put it out in your parking lot or loading dock.
