Americans produce over 28 tons of trash per person every year. And trash removal services are almost taken for granted.
However, with a population of just over 333,000,000, the United States is not the top offender when it comes to waste generated. In fact, according to the World Bank, at just 9,287,898,736 tons annually, the U.S. only ranks third among the nations for trash generated.
But we are also the third most populous nation in the world. Yet, even at that, we only make up about 6 percent of the world’s total population and the two biggest - China and India - each have almost four times as many people as we do.
A World Full of Trash
Surprisingly, Canada - who weighs in at only number 38 with a population of just 36,136,376 - has the highest volume of trash generated per capita in the world. With only a tenth of the population of the United States, our neighbors to the north manage to produce about 40 tons of trash per person every year!
To be fair, a large amount of this waste is industrial and agricultural, so we can’t assume that Canadians just make a lot of garbage. And, as a nation, they have been put on the 247 Wall Street list of countries doing the most to protect the environment.
According to an article at USA Today,
“The world is drowning in trash, and the waste generation rates are only increasing, according to the World Bank. Due to population growth and urban areas growth, the amount of trash countries produce is only expected to rise – by some estimates as much as 70% between 2016 and 2050.”
The tendency for most of us is to think about the trash individuals and families generate, but residential trash is only a fraction of the total waste produced by most countries. .
In fact, municipal solid waste management (MSW), which is waste generated from companies, various institutions, small businesses, and homes, typically make up less than 5 percent of the total amount of waste produced in a country.
Construction and agriculture generate the rest and, in some countries, as much as 90 percent of the total waste generated there.

Many countries, like the United States, have long recognized the importance of properly and safely disposing of trash. Here at home we have passed numbers of both federal and state laws regulating how cities, corporations and individuals get rid of the trash they produce.
As individuals and households, we can reduce consumption and be selective about the types of products and packaging we do buy. And, by actively reusing and recycling, our collective efforts can make a significant reduction in the amount of trash generated.
