There's little as shocking as a hot morning shower suddenly going cold because of a failed water heater. And hot water heater disposal is no fun either.

Hot water heaters can be both bulky and heavy. Not to mention difficult to handle. So, how do you get rid of your old, dead hot water heater?

All Good Things Come to an End - Even Hot Water Heaters

Nothing lasts forever and that's especially true for appliances and other equipment in our homes. And there are many things we also tend to take for granted, like hot water heaters.

Until they don't. Heat water, that is.

There are few things as distressing as having a house full of kids, along with mom and dad, and no hot water. From baths to showers to dish washing, we depend on a ready source of hot water in our everyday living. So, water heater failure can be a distressing event in any home.

So, how long should one last?

According to one source,

"While many say 8 to 12 years is the expected life for a standard gas-powered water heater, this range can change and be very dependent on where you are located. The level of sediment in your tank affects the lifespan of your water heater."

And home maintenance guru, Bob Vila, agrees,

"A traditional tank-type water heater lasts an average of 8 to 12 years. Inside the tank, an anode rod protects the interior lining by attracting all corrosive particles to itself through a process called electrolysis. When the rod has corroded to such an extent that it can no longer do its job, those particles settle at the bottom of the water tank, where they may eventually destroy the lining. Once corrosion starts inside the tank, the water heater has entered into its final stage of life."

The newer, tankless water heaters, on  the other hand, can last up to 20 years. However, the cost of these convenient (and much smaller) units means that many households will still opt for the more traditional model of hot water tank.

Getting Rid of Big Water Heaters is a Big Job

Regardless of what type of water heating appliance you use to replace your old one, odds are you will have a large - and heavy - appliance to remove and get rid of.

While many contractors will haul your old unit away for you in exchange for paying them to install your new one, not all of them do. And if you are handy enough to install a new hot water heater by yourself, taking a DIY approach to water heater disposal is never recommended.

Hot water heater tanks are heavy. Even without the water.

On average, you're looking at a large, hard to hold-on-to appliance that can weigh anywhere from 100 to 200 pounds or more. And, if you happen to be the proud owner of a Rheem Commercial High Efficiency ASME Natural Gas Water Heater - which is unlikely for a residential structure - you have a 600 pound unit.

And that's when it's empty!

But you may still choose to - or have to - remove your old unit from where it's installed to make way for a new appliance. The good news is that, with some capable assistance, this can be a DIY task.  So, to help you with that endeavor we have put together this handy checklist for hot water heater removal.

Of course, once you manage to get your old water heater out of the house or the garage, you'll need to get rid of it by disposing of it somehow. And that really shouldn't be a DIY task.

Or, as we like to say at Junk King, "Don't do it yourself. Hire the pros. It's what all the 'cool kids' do."
