Once corrosion starts inside the tank, the water heater has entered into its final stage of life."

The newer, tankless water heaters, on  the other hand, can last up to 20 years. However, the cost of these convenient (and much smaller) units means that many households will still opt for the more traditional model of hot water tank.

Getting Rid of Big Water Heaters is a Big Job
