Everyone agrees that recycling is a good thing to do and the right thing to do. But recycling the right way isn't always easy.
Unfortunately, not everything can be recycled. Worse, many of those things still end up in our recycling waste stream - and that causes problems.
Recycling: When You Want to Do Right, You Want to Do It Right
Recycling really isn't hard.
You just throw your plastic, glass, paper, or metal waste into the proper bin, and - Boom! - you're done. Right?
Yeah... not so much.
As a community, many of us engage in recycling with good intentions but often with misguided ones, too. For example, soiled or wet paper and carboard waste products can't be processed in the equipment used to recycle paper and paperboard material.
Not everything that is made of plastic is recyclable, either. Which means additional sorting and occasional shutting down of equipment to clear plastic store bags or bubble wrap sheets out of the gears and hinges.
Glass, too, presents problems. While all glass is inherently recyclable for an infinite number of cycles, some glass has to be processes separately and with different techniques.
Same thing with some metals.
Metals are almost all recyclable and most of theme can be recycled endlessly, like aluminum. But even aluminum has some limitations: aluminum foil contaminated with food, aluminum that is adhered to plastic or paper lining, and most aerosol cans made from aluminum.
But, with the right approach and some smart tips, recycling smart is a breeze!
A Simple Checklist for Smart Recycling
Of course, even though trying to recycle waste products that are not easily or actually recyclable is a problem, not trying to recycle at all is worse.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that 75 percent of the material in the waste stream can be recycled or composted, but we're only managing to do that for just over 34 percent of it.
It may sound a bit trite, but if all of us simply doubled the amount we recycle personally, that rate could exceed 60 percent.
So, some simple and smart tips for recycling right can go a long way towards making that happen. Which is why we put together this handy checklist of basic recycling tips for you:
