Mattress Disposal: The Right Way

Every home in America has a used mattress - or two, or three - or more. And when it's time to replace these old mattresses, there is a right way to do it.

Of course, there are quite a few wrong ways to dispose of them, as well. Which is a big problem since they are large, bulky, and unsightly. And the wrong disposal methods are often illegal.

Mattress Disposal: The Wrong Way

Mattresses get old. They wear out. And they get to a point where they simply don't do the job anymore. So we get rid of them and buy new ones.

Sometimes, that means the retailer who sold us the new mattress will offer to haul away our old one as a value-added service, which is very cool. But not everyone does. And many people are buying their new mattresses online these days.

Which means that old mattress disposal is on them.

Unfortunately, a used mattress is not something that can be easily sold on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace, and so on. In fact, in some states it is quite difficult to sell a used mattress to as a private party.

So, the next best thing for most people is to simply dispose of the old mattress.

Which is often far easier said than done...

It is difficult to load and transport mattresses, especially those Queen and King-sized monsters! If you don't own a truck or have a small trailer handy - and, really, who has one of those? - then you have to strap it to the top of your car, if that's even doable.

And then you need to know where you can take your old mattress for proper disposal.

Which is why too many people end up disposing of their used mattresses in unacceptable and, often, illegal ways.

Mattress Disposal the Right Way: By Recycling

Of course, if you can sell a gently used and clean mattress, then by all means, do so. There's no reason not to recoup some of the cost of your old mattress, especially since it probably cost upwards of a $1,000 new.

And, if you can't sell it - or simply don't want to bother with the hassle of doing so - then gifting a used mattress that is still in good condition is a great option.

There are many people who are in need of a decent mattress that cannot afford the $600 to $1,000 or more required to purchase a new one. And there are plenty of organizations that can facilitate a mattress donation, as well.

However, even this route can by a bit burdensome with the various laws and requirements put on potential mattress donors in many states.

But there are few, if any, restrictions on simply giving your usable mattress to a family member, a friend in need, or even a neighbor. Transporting mattresses is still difficult, but if you can arrange it, this can be a great option.

Yet, not all mattresses are reusable. Which is where recycling can be the best disposal solution.

Really? You Can Recycle Mattresses?

As odd as that may seem to many people, mattresses can indeed by recycled.

While it is not a simple process like recycling aluminum cans or plastic water bottles, most of the materials that make up a typical mattress can be reused in some form or another.

Of course, you obviously can't fit a mattress into your residential curbside recycling bin! Nor can you simply drop it off at the nearest recycling kiosk in town. Mattresses have to be processed for recycling by specialized facilities

Here's how it works:

And, while it's a good thing that mattress recycling is a viable disposal option that is available to just about everyone throughout the United States, getting your old mattress to a facility can be a challenge.

The good news is that you don't have to do it yourself.

Quality, professional junk removal firms like Junk King are equipped and trained to pick up, haul, and properly dispose of old mattresses. In fact, at Junk King, we specialize in mattress disposal and recycling. And we make it our job to make the entire process easy, quick, and affordable for you.

When one considers that mattresses don't do well at landfill facilities, recycling make far more sense economically as well as environmentally.

How bad is it? According to a study on the mattress recycling industry,

Americans dispose of an estimated 20 million mattresses and box springs every year and the vast majority end up in landfills or incinerators. That’s roughly 55,000 discarded each and every day. They contribute 450 million pounds of waste and fill more than 100 million cubic feet of landfill space every year. End-on-end, the number of disposed mattresses every year would circle the earth.

So, when you're ready to get rid of that old mattress still propped up in the garage or taking up space in your spare bedroom, simply call Junk King.
