Junk Disposal Doesn't Have to Mean Landfills

It may seem that the easiest route is to just haul your junk items to the nearest dump and be done with it. But you need to think about what's involved with that task.

Proper junk disposal is never that easy. In fact, depending on where you live, just finding a local landfill or near-by waste management facility can be difficult.  The problem is that our available landfills are filling up and closing at an alarming rate.

In the U.S., we generate between four to seven pounds of trash per person every day on average. And, although much of that trash and junk is recyclable, most of it still ends up in a landfill. 

According to the EPA,

"In 2017, the amount of MSW generated was 267.8 million tons. The amount of MSW recycled was 67.2 million tons and the amount composted was 27 million tons. The amount of MSW combusted with energy recovery was 34 million tons, while the amount of MSW sent to landfills was 139.6 million tons."

So, what's that mean? Well, for starters, it means that over half - about 53 percent - of all our trash, garbage, and junk ends up in our landfills. Which is unfortunate since somewhere around 60 to 70 percent of it is recyclable or reusable.

Another reason that responsible junk disposal and waste removal is critical is the rapidly diminishing number of landfills left in the United States.

Statista.com notes that,

"The United States has around 1,270 landfills, with about 330 landfills situated in the West. According to EPA data, Michigan had the highest amount of trash in its landfills, amounting to more than 62 tons per person in 2019. Overall, the United States generated 268 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2017 – a significant increase from 88.1 million tons in 1960. However, the number of landfills in the U.S. has significantly decreased since 1990 from over 6,300 to under 1,270 landfills."

What this means is fewer opportunities to unload your own junk and debris. And fewer family outings at the local dump - even if you wanted to do such a thing!

Another problem for most people when it comes to taking care of their own junk disposal is having a suitable vehicle for hauling any large loads of junk. If you can't fit it all into your trunk and backseat - assuming you'd even want to - then you are left with borrowing or renting a truck

And this option can be time-consuming and expensive.

Of course, since you are going to have to spend money anyway, you could fire a local guy who offers junk hauling services. The problem with this option is that you have no guarantee of the competence, trustworthiness, and professionalism of that "guy with a truck."
