There are times when your regular household garbage container isn’t enough. That’s when you need a trash removal service.

Perhaps you’ve done some major cleaning up around your property and more trash piled up than you anticipated. Or maybe you own a small business and a recent event has left you with so much trash you can’t wait for the dumpster to get emptied

Whatever the reason, there are times when you have more trash sitting there than you can feasibly remove yourself.

The Problem With Landfills

When we decide to take our excessive or large trash and dispose of it ourselves - assuming we even have a vehicle for doing that - this usually means a trip to the landfill. And that trip can be a major task itself.

The United States produces a massive amount of trash considering our relatively small portion of the global population. Americans in the U.S. only make up less than 5 percent of the world’s population, but we generate more trash per capita than all but two other nations. (Canada and Bulgaria)

In addition, we are also number three in total waste produced annually, behind China and India.

Here in the U.S., a large amount of all that trash ends up in landfills even though our recycling efforts are some of the best on the planet.

Here’s a chart showing which states contribute the most to the landfills:

Part of the problem with landfills is that they “fill up” at some point and can no longer be utilized for burying our never-ending stream of waste. In fact, the U.S. is home to approximately 1,250 landfill facilities located throughout the country, with the majority in Southern and Midwestern United States.

Here is a graphical representation of the current locations of landfills across the United States:

One of the bigger concerns with landfills here in the U.S. is the potential for toxic contamination and other pollutants being released through groundwater and other channels. Another concern is when will there no longer be any viable real estate left to put these unsightly pits?

Running out of landfill space in America is a hotly debated topic, yet we continue to produce trash at unprecedented rates in this country.

Increased Recycling of Trash as an Alternative

Even if you do think you can carry out your own trash removal, it pays to consider how and where you can recycle most, if not all, of your trash materials.

Recycling is an option for far more than paper, plastic, glass and cans. Yard waste, appliances, mattresses, wood-based products, electronics and much more are all, or largely, recyclable. Many of these items need to be disassembled and broken down to their component parts, but much of what they are made of is either reusable or recyclable. The difference lies in where you take your trash for disposal.

Websites like Earth911.org have great resources for helping you find local facilities for recycling your trash items and unwanted household goods and other junk. Certain items such as most electronics need to be disposed of following legally mandated criteria.

Some appliances will need to be partially dismantled first, like older models of refrigerators and air conditioning units.

Even items such as old clothing, furniture and old mattresses can be recycled.
