If you’ve upgraded an appliance or simply bought a replacement, having free used appliance pick up is a plus.

The problem is in determining who and how to make that happen. With that in mind, here are some tips for free used appliance pick up services you can make use of.

Some Common Free Used Appliance Pick Up Options

While you could look for a service that provides free pick up and hauling of old appliances, it’s not very likely you’ll be successful. Aside from some retailers who will do that for you if you are buying a new appliance from them, this is not a common service.

However, there are a few common ways of getting rid of your old appliance that will give you free pick up, as well.

Donate Your Used Appliance

One of the nicest and easiest ways of getting rid of old appliances is to simply give them away.

If your old appliances are still in working condition, you can start by asking friends and family if any of them needs an appliance. Posting your offer on a site like Nextdoor or Facebook can help you find a grateful recipient quickly.

Another option is to donate your old but working appliance to a non-profit organization. Two examples of charities that actively ask for old appliances are The Salvation Army and Habitat for Humanity ReStores. Be sure to confirm that they are able to take your appliance before you remove it from your house, load it up on a truck, and take it to them.

Another charitable organization worth considering is the Vietnam Veterans Association, or VVA. They accept all types of donations, including used appliances, and offer free pick up. You can schedule a donation pick up by going to their website and looking for the nearest location.

Find a Buyer for Your Used Appliance

Selling your old appliances may take more effort than simply donating them, but sites like Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace make it easier than ever. This approach will allow you to make a bit of extra money, get rid of your old appliance, and have someone else (the buyer) pick up the appliance from you.

However, if you don’t want to deal with putting up an ad, taking pictures, and writing a description, then you can sell your appliance to a scrap metal dealer. You won’t get as much, especially if you can have it picked up for free, but you’ll have some cash from the transaction and free used appliance pick up.

As one article notes,

"There are a few different ways you can sell a refrigerator for scrap. The least profitable way is to scrap the refrigerator as a whole unit, in which case you would get a per-pound price for scrap metal.”

Have Your Appliance Recycled

Recycling old appliances is a responsible and eco-friendly way to get rid of them. Not only can you get your free appliance pick up, but the metals and different components in your appliance will be recycled or reused. In addition, you can rest assured that your old washer or refrigerator isn’t away in a landfill nearby, negatively adding to the environment impact.

When you need to have your unwanted appliances picked up there are a few things to consider. Along with the junk hauling part of the job, you need to determine if your appliance should be recycled.

Typically, any appliances you can't sell or even donate are candidates for recycling. Unless you can find someone willing to repair them, these appliances can’t be used for anything. And taking them to your local landfill is either not allowed in your state or, if it is, can still involve restrictions and special disposal requirements.

Which appliances need to be recycled? Those that are no longer working, machines with broken seals and frayed cords, or that overheat or smoke. In addition, there are appliances that may have been recalled by their manufacturers but never returned.

While free is great and you have options to consider, sometimes it’s far easier to simply call in a professional junk hauler like Junk King. You won’t get free pick up, but you will get fair and transparent pricing

And it’s the best way to ensure that your used appliance gets recycled properly.
