The numbers vary depending on where you go for the information, but the common fact is that landfills are diminishing in number here in the U.S. But all of our garbage has to go somewhere.

What this means for most Americans is that it's becoming more difficult remove and dispose of their own garbage, junk and debris. More statistics GlobalCitizen.org reveals a somewhat alarming view of the state of landfills, 

"The US generates more than 258 million tons of municipal solid waste each year — that’s all the packaging, clothing, bottles, food scraps, newspapers, batteries, and everything else that gets thrown into garbage cans and hauled onto sidewalks for weekly pick-up.

Around 34.6% of that waste gets recycled, some gets burned for energy, and the rest gets sent to landfills. Now it looks like the 2,000 active landfills in the US that hold the bulk of this trash are reaching their capacity..."
