Now that we're past Memorial Day, it appears we can have a summer of outdoor fun and relaxation without masks once again. But we still need to be safe.

While not every area is completely out from under restrictions, it seems that we will be able to pursue our favorite summer activities this year with little or no health mandates.  However, just being outdoors carries risks for people.

In the Summertime When the Weather is Fine

Unless you're in one of the many regions suffering from unseasonably hot weather. Or drought. Or any number of other conditions that can make summer outings a bit risky. In fact, there are several things to be aware of when enjoying the great outdoors, lounging by the pool, or simply being at a park playing baseball or volleyball.

According to one article , the top four summer "illnesses" are:

  1. Insect/Arachnid Bites and Stings
  2. Heat Exhaustion
  3. Food Poisoning
  4. Sunburn

And we can safely add to that conditions such as dehydration and heatstroke.

Depending on where you live there is also the threat of Lyme Disease, sever allergies, West Nile Virus, and even various waterborne diseases and infections.

An article from Bustle.com noted that,

"Though it may be part of the summer fun, it's important to be aware that there are many waterborne illnesses you can contract. According to a 2017 study published in the American Family Physician, algae, bacteria, chlorine gas, parasites, bacteria can lead to gastrointestinal infections, like colitis. Further, the study found waterborne agents can also cause respiratory illnesses, as well as soft tissue conditions."

While our point here is not to frighten anyone into simply just staying home and indoors all summer - we've probably all had enough of that! - but to point out that it pays to take precautions and to be aware when outdoors enjoying the summer weather.

Staying Summer Safe: Safety Tips for Summer

In some parts of the country, it is traditional to stay indoors during the hottest times of the day. Keeping out of the heat and the sun is simply a common sense thing to do in many locales. However, for many others, it is far too easy to take the relatively mild heat for granted and possible pay the price for too much exposure.

Summer activities can sometimes lead to health issues and even injuries when we're not careful or paying attention.

With that in mind, here is a simple guide to ten safety tips to help you have a safe and enjoyable summertime:

For Everything There is a Season - Like Summer Cleanups

Maybe it's that old fence in the backyard that is still being propped up with sticks and broken fence boards. Or perhaps your deck has finally gone through it's last harsh winter and its time to dispose of it all and build a new one. On the other hand, you might have decided to renew the flooring in the house. That could means ragged rolls of old carpeting and padding that has to be gotten rid of.

Whatever the reason and whatever the material is, if it is junk, trash, garbage, or debris then it needs to go.

While some of the many things we may need to dispose of are fairly easy to get rid of or at least place in a pile of other junk marked for disposal, not everything is.

Bulk trash items or large junk items such as old furniture or appliances can not only be difficult to move, doing so can be a safety hazard in itself. Cuts, bruises, sprained muscles, and even seriously back injuries are common results of homeowners and others tackling large junk removal on their own.

And undertaking the entire process of removing, then loading, hauling, and unloading these large and bulky junk items and materials simply increases the number of opportunities for injuries or accidents.

But there's an easier and better way.
