yard cleanup

Even the most patient homeowners can agree that cleaning up a backyard can be a time-consuming and frustrating task. However, with the right cleaning strategy you can tackle the job with confidence.

If you can no longer stand the mess and want a beautiful yard again, here are some yard cleanup tips to get you started:

  1. Prepare yourself (mentally and physically)

Before you get started, you need to make sure you have everything you need. The essentials include: gardening gloves, big trash bags, clippers, shears, and a hat and sunscreen if it’s sunny outside. Take a good look at your yard and think about what you’re going to start with. Sticking to a strategy will ensure that you don’t give up halfway through because you’re feeling overwhelmed. Pace yourself; it’s okay if you don’t get everything done at once, especially if your backyard cleanup is long overdue.

  1. Start with the big jobs first

Remove the large pieces of waste and debris – this could be in the form of rocks, tree branches, or even old furniture that you’ve been storing in your yard ‘temporarily’. You could also reuse the rocks and stones to create a decorative border for landscaping – this would look great around a herb garden or flower bed. We suggest renting a dumpster to store the waste and debris to create a less hazardous workspace.

  1. Prune overgrown trees and shrubs

Overgrown and weatherworn branches is not a good look. Trim damaged tree limbs with tree shears, and use a handsaw for anything larger than ½ inch in diameter. You can shape overgrown with shears or electric hedge clippers. If you can’t reach all the branches, contact a professional tree-trimmer to take care of the rest.

  1. Get rid of the smaller yard waste

You can start by raking the dead leaves and twigs. Instead of throwing it all away, you can use the leaves as compost. Use a leaf blower to gather dead leaves into a pile, and then rake the leaf pile to your compost pile. You can do the same with tree, shrub, and hedge clippings. The least fun part of a yard cleanup is pulling out the weeds – but alas, it has to be done. You could hire someone to do this for you, or you could make it a fun incentive-based game with your kids.

  1. Mow your lawn

If your lawn is starting to look like a prairie, it might be time for a trim. Follow the one-third rule –  never cut away more than one-third of the grass blade in any one mowing. If clippings are too long and heavy, catch them with a bagging unit or clean after mowing with a leaf rake. It’s best to mow when the grass is dry. Remember, never send off grass clippings to a dumping site. Instead, use it for mulch on your vegetable or flower gardens, or add it to your compost pile.

  1. Prepare a compost pile

Your compost pile could consist of old leaves, cuttings, spent foliage, and last season's mulch. Gather all of this into a pile and add several shovelfuls of topsoil to it. You can then mix the materials together and hose the pile down with water until it is moist. Check out this great post on Eartheasy for some handy tips on creating a compost pile.

  1. Get rid of everything you can’t reuse

After your yard cleanup, you may be left with a variety of miscellaneous items: huge branches, stumps, plasterboard, old fencing, plastics, and metals. It can be quite a mission to haul away these bags to dump at your local dumping site – that’s why we recommend hiring a professional junk removal company to do it for you.
