On The Move: Property Cleanouts And Junk Removal

People move or relocate for a variety of reasons. And many times they can't take everything with them, or don't want it all. That's when property cleanouts can help.

The problem is that many people who are in transit either don't have the time or the means to do it all themselves. And that's when a junk removal service can help.

A Nation of People on the Move: Property Cleanouts Needed

Not every home in every move needs to have old furniture, appliances, or other items removed.

But quite often they do.

And, when they do, the previous occupants may not be able to take care of that chore themselves. Sometimes it is simply a matter of time - the house has to be vacated and they need to be in a new location as quickly as possible. Other times, it's a lack of resources - the individual or family may not have a suitable vehicle or the necessary manpower to make it happen.

In many situations, the house is a rental and there are property managers or landlords that are tasked with the final cleanout after a tenant vacates.

Unfortunately, evictions occur periodically and the house can be left in a less-than-desirable state of cleanliness upon the prior occupant's departure. In other words, there can be some major cleaning out and junk removal required.

Whatever the reason, if there is property being left behind, or large amounts of trash, junk, and debris to be cleared out, a property or house cleanout is still needed.

Which is why Junk King specializes in property cleanouts

Don't Fence Me In - When It's Time for a House Cleanout

In the US, people move all the time.

And, according to recent Census data, nearly 28 million people — or 8.4 percent of all Americans — moved in the United States in 2021.  In fact, it's estimated that the average American changes residences more than 11 times in his or her lifetime, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

In European nations, this figure is closer to just four moves in an average lifetime. Which begs the question: why do Americans move or relocate so frequently?

According to one article, the top seven reasons for moves are:

  1. Job Changes
  2. Seeking Out Better Schools
  3. Needing More or Less Space
  4. Wanting a Change of Scenery
  5. Changes in Relationships
  6. Money Problems
  7. Wanting to Become a Homeowner

Not included in this list are the occasional foreclosure, tenant evictions, and even tenants skipping out to avoid rent. While these are not as common and all unfortunate, they often result in a need for property cleanouts, as well.

Summer is easily the busiest time of year for moving. The Census data has nearly 45 percent of annual U.S. moves taking place between May and August. And the busiest dates to move are June 1st and 30th, while September 1st and 30th come in slightly behind.

Regardless of the time of year, how far one is relocating, or the reasons for the move, all moveouts share at least one thing in common: waste.

How much waste is generated in a house moveout and cleanout?

According to one source, this is how much estimated waste is generated in moves across the country each year:

  • 900 million cardboard boxes
  • 345,000 tons of food
  • 353 million gallons of fuel
  • 90 million pounds of packing paper
  • 30 million rolls of tape
  • And 8.4 million tons of junk. This is primarily all of the things stored in cabinets, drawers, and garages that end up getting thrown out.

So, when it's all said and done, there are essentially two moves: one for all your belongings, and one for all the junk, debris, trash, and rubbish.

Just When You Thought It was Safe to Leave the House

Property managers of rental units are quite familiar with this. Apartments, condos, and rental homes rarely have the same tenants for more than a few years. That's because, as we've noted already, people are constantly on the move.

In fact, when it comes to renters, the Census Bureau has determined that almost 13 percent of them move annually.

But the problem is that the properties that are vacated on such a regular basis cannot be leased again until the junk is removed and the property is cleaned. And each day that a rental property remains unoccupied and full of junk is time that goes by without collecting rent.

And, as any property manager or landlord knows, there are few things in their line of work that is more annoying than having to clean up a previous tenant's mess, especially when it’s an entire apartment, condo, or house, full of junk, debris, and maybe even old furniture.

Before a  janitorial company can be brought in to clean the house or apartment, all the junk has to be gone. And who's got time for that?

Especially today in our "sort of" post-COVID world.

People moving and relocating during the last two years have faced a long series of health concerns, worker shortages, and more recently, rising fuel costs.

In fact, there have been equipment shortages plaguing the moving truck industry, as well as driver shortages, truck shortages, and other types of labor shortages. And there was even an extended period of time when it was next to impossible to find a rental car available!

But one the biggest challenges for people relocating, for landlords, and for property managers - even in the best of times - is taking care of a property cleanout and the subsequent junk removal.
