Old Hot Tub Removal: Tips and Tools

The good news is that most homeowners already have the tools and equipment needed for easily removing old hot tubs and spas. If this is something you think you want to tackle on your own (or, better yet, with some help!) here are some basic tips for getting that job done.

NOTE: Stay Safe – Gloves and safety goggles should always be worn.

Tools Needed:

  • Safety eye wear and work gloves
  • Protective clothing
  • Drill/screwdrivers
  • Jigsaw
  • Reciprocating saw
  • Large tarps
  1. Turn off all electrical circuits to the hot tub

Remove any water and ensure the tub and its components are drained and dry.

Make sure the power is shut off to the hot tub. Before starting the process, be certain that the tub is disconnected from all water, electrical, or gas lines.

Refer to your owner’s manual to determine where any special wiring or gas lines are in the spa. All possible removable elements should be taken out (lights, jets, etc.)

  1. Remove the spa skirt

If the outside of your hot tub is made from tongue-and-groove parts. you can easily remove those parts without sawing.

Otherwise, be sure to refer to your owner’s manual to locate parts have been screwed in, which can be removed first to avoid sawing through them.

  1. Disassemble the hot tub

Remove all motors first and all the wiring and piping underneath your hot tub.

The shell, or tub, is often the hardest part to haul away because of its size. Therefore it’s easier to simply cut it into smaller, manageable portions. However, it may also contain nozzles and jets, so you need to be careful to cut it without hitting these.

Breaking down the cover is usually far easier. You can often simply remove the foam from inside of the vinyl covering and cut into sections.

  1. Loading and hauling the debris

Once you have all your parts and components removed from the yard and loaded into your truck or trailer, make sure it is secured and tarped well before transporting.

Bonus tip: Consider taking all the electrical and metal components to the nearest recycling center and make some cash!
