Getting Organized Isn't A Hassle With A Plan For Decluttering

Summer is coming to an end, school is starting, and the onset of fall is a great time to declutter and get organized while the weather is good and the days are still long.

We live in a culture that celebrates shopping and buying, and getting "stuff" is almost a hobby with many people. Consequently, is it any wonder why junk accumulation is a chronic problem for many Americans? It's as if there is a law of nature at work: "Stay in one place long enough and junk will multiply accordingly."

As a result, we are constantly dealing with a seemingly endless increase in clutter.

One of the realities of life is this accumulation of things. Whether it's simply collecting too many clothes, shoes, and other personal belongings, or larger household items like furniture or sports equipment, almost everyone finds themselves having to deal with excess junk at some point.

Decluttering: You are not the only one!

Sometimes, people find that they want - or need - to "downsize" their lifestyle and declutter their homes. This can mean simply getting rid of some belongings, or engaging in a major downsizing of everything. This can happen by choice or by circumstance, but it almost always involves getting rid of things.

For too many people, though, the normal response is to simply tossing things out and getting rid of junk. But adding to your local waste stream or the local landfill isn't always the best choice. However, with a little planning and forethought, much of what we see as "junk" can actually be reused or repurposed in other ways including recycling.

Keep in mind that what your might consider to be nothing more than "junk" can hold great value for someone else. In fact, considering all of your disposal options can be a rewarding exercise to engage in when it comes to junk removal. How you choose to get rid of things can benefit others, benefit yourself, and even benefit the planet!

Decluttering: What It Really Takes

It requires some dedicated time, effort and prior planning. That being said, actually staying organized is another project altogether. This requires a change in habits and, to a certain extent, lifestyle. But you have to start with where you are!

According to the Container Store website, there are three rules to organization:

  1. Visibility
  2. Accessibility
  3. Flexibility

Visibility simply means keeping stored items in places that are easily seen and identifiable. Accessibility requires making sure the things you need most often are easy to get to. And flexibility mean having storage systems that can be easily re-arranged or re-used in different ways, when needed.

With the fall season just around the corner, this is a great time of year to finally declutter your work or living space, and get things organized around you.

And, with that in mind, we created this "Quick Guide for Getting Organized" to help you with your project:

Now That You've "Decluttered"

For many people the real challenge is in staying uncluttered and organized. Finally getting free from all your clutter and organizing the remainder of your stuff is an accomplishment worth celebrating. But staying organized and avoiding clutter for the long term is even better.

Part of the secret is to cultivate a more "minimalist" mindset. While that might sound a bit "Zen-like", it simply means learning to accumulate less things and to be ready to rid yourself of things you don't really need. This is an ongoing, perpetual habit to develop and maintain.

This also means developing habits of organizing, storing and regularly "de-cluttering" your space. Bear in mind, too, that everyone is different and what might seem "junky" and cluttered to one person might be perfectly acceptable to another.
