Relocating to a new office or building should be planned well in advance. Having a planning checklist can help.

Sometimes an office relocation is simply unavoidable, but often it is an exciting new chapter in the growth of a business.

But moving your office space with all its supplies, equipment, files, and office furniture can be an almost overwhelming task. In fact, it is no surprise that many businesses hire moving firms to just take of everything.

Office Relocation and Commercial Junk Removal the Smart Way

While that may be considered a smart business move, there are vast numbers of smaller shops and businesses who must do it themselves. And, while this is a project that can certainly be done, the smart approach always involves advanced planning.

When there are multiple offices or massive numbers of boxes and large furniture and office equipment, a planning checklist can be incredibly helpful. And although you may carry out the move yourself, there are still certain tasks in that plan that should include outsourcing the task, namely all of your commercial junk hauling needs.

So, how many people actually move every year?

The U.S. Census Bureau estimates that almost 40 million American households relocate each year and, according to the U.S. Postal Service, there are about 38 million change-of-address forms that get processed annually. We are obviously a people continually on the move!

However, there is no official tracking of business moves. What we do know is that that many businesses will move each year either because they find a better lease deal, or they have expanded and outgrown their current home. Regardless of the reasons for relocating, the project can be challenging.

An Office Relocation Planning Checklist

Not every move is the same for every business.

For example, if you are a manufacturer with stocks of inventory, machinery and raw materials, you will have a far different set of priorities and needs than, say, a financial management firm with very little equipment to move.

While the specific tasks of your move can vary widely from those of other businesses, there are a number of common steps that have to be accounted for when relocating.

With this in mind, it is helpful to have tools to assist in the relocating and commercial junk removal tasks. The following is a suggested checklist for relocating businesses or planning a move:

One Last Item: Update Your Business Information Online

In addition to informing all your vendors, suppliers and clients about your new address, you will want to change your NAP (Name, Address, Phone) information on your Google My Business page. But only updating address information in your Google My Business listing won’t be enough to ensure your online presence is current, however.

You should take steps to update your business data on all of the directories and review sites you can think of including Yelp!, Yellow Pages, City Search, Local.com and Acxiom. It is recommended that you also visit sites such as Infogroup, Localeze and Acxiom to check for any out-of-date information. And it's smart move to update your accounts on all major search engines to avoid showing up with your old listings.

In addition, you can use Google Map Maker to directly edit Google’s maps. Once your edit is approved, the new information will show up on all subsequent Google map searches.

And don't forget your own websites and social media accounts!
