In some English-speaking countries it is known as "rubbish." In the US, we refer to it as garbage or trash. But solid waste also includes what we call "junk."

The problem isn't really what we call it, but what we do with it. Especially the junk.

Every wondered what we throw away every day in America?

Well, for starters, we throw away about 1,636,230,844 pounds every day. Or 818,115 tons, which is easier to picture for most people. All of which comes down to almost 5 pounds of waste per person each day, on average.

And the number one thing we throw away? Paper and paperboard trash. 

The good news is that the number one thing recycled in the US is also paper and paperboard waste. So, that part somewhat balances out. But we only manage to recycle about 25 percent of all the municipal solid waste, or MSW, that we generate every year. About half of it still ends up in landfills. The other roughly 25 percent that isn't recycled or tossed into a dump gets combusted or composted, for the most part. 

All in all, it's not a pretty picture. 

According to an EPA report,

"MSW, more commonly known as trash, comprises various items we commonly throw away. These items include packaging, food, grass clippings, sofas, computers, tires and refrigerators."

Interestingly, while it is true that Americans throw away a wide variety of items and materials each and every day, after paper and paper packing waste, the next two largest categories of garbage we produce each day are food waste and yard waste. 

The EPA's report also noted,

"Food waste comprised ... 63.1 million tons or 21.6 percent of total generation in 2018. Yard trimmings comprised the next largest material category, estimated at 35.4 million tons, or 12.1 percent of total generation, in 2018."

Some states are addressing this issue with laws that require or encourage recycling or composting both residential food waste as well as yard waste like grass clippings.

According to a recent ABC News story,

"Starting January [2022], there's no more tossing food scraps like banana peels or veggies in the trash. Californians will instead be required to put excess food in waste bins. Cities and counties will then turn the waste into compost, creating an energy source."

In addition, in California, as of January 1, 2022 all businesses and multifamily complexes are now required to comply with organics collection, which includes food waste and yard trimmings.

And, while these are huge steps forward, there are massive amounts of waste - and junk - that still end up in landfills despite the fact that up to 70 percent or more is recyclable!

Enough Trash Talk, What About the Junk?

While it is true that large amounts of paper waste, paperboard and cardboard waste, and other packaging materials can be seen as "junk'" we usually mean other things.

For example, old furniture and appliances, used mattresses, broken down power tools and exercise equipment, piles of old wood and construction waste - all these and much, much more are the stuff of our "junk" piles.

The list of what we think of as junk is long and varied. 

It includes electronics, or e-waste, old hot tubs, old TVs and computer monitors, broken tool sheds, old toys, bags of clothing and bedding, and so on. In other words, pretty much anything and everything that we no longer want or need and that won't fit in our trash bins.

The problem is that too much of all that junk still ends up in landfills instead of being reused or recycled.
