So you've finally decided to get a new mattress. But once you get it, how will you manage your old mattress disposal?

It has been shown that the right mattress can drastically improve your quality of sleep. A good mattress will also help you rest better so you won’t be waking so many times throughout the night. And, the studies show, the better you sleep, the better you’ll function the following day.

According to an article by The Huffington Post:

One study followed 29 men and 30 women who all had minor musculoskeletal sleep-related pain and compromised sleep. First, they rated their sleep for 28 days on their own beds. Then, the participants spent 28 days sleeping on new medium-firm beds and reported their stress levels.

Participants felt less stressed on these new bedding systems. Overall, they experienced increased sleep quality and decreased back discomfort.

Speaking of back discomfort, the right mattress can do wonders for reducing pain. A good mattress supports your body. That’s why soft, plush mattresses can cause pain over time. Although they seem comfortable in the store when you lie on them for a minute, they oftentimes don’t have enough support to ease your pain over long-term periods.

The article goes on to state that old mattresses can cause issues with people who experience allergies. Over time and with use, old mattresses accumulate dead skin cells and dust mites and these can irritate people with allergies. While proper care such as washing your sheets frequently can help minimize this problem, it can’t completely solve it. In fact, The Better Sleep Council suggests that you should change your mattress if it's over seven years old.

Upgrading to a new mattress is always a great idea, considering you probably spend a third of your life sleeping on that bed. Back pain and insomnia can both be the results of sleeping on a bad or worn-out mattress.

But once you get that new mattress, how do you get rid of the old one?

Many of our homes have old mattresses down in the basement or up in the attic, collecting dust and taking up valuable space. And they are difficult to get rid of.

Many charities balk at taking old mattresses, often for sanitary reasons. Just the task of trying to load mattresses into a truck to haul off to the local landfill can be a major chore.

And having it picked up by your local waste disposal management company can be time-consuming, costly and still require you to haul the thing out to the curb on the appointed day.
